Stuck in a ditch after being hit by a car, the Clearview canine ended up in good hands.
Engine 76 happened to be passing by Tuesday on its way back to its Mill Creek station following training at Snohomish County Fire District 7 headquarters.
The crew witnessed the dog get hit on 180th Street SE just west of Highway 9.
Lt. Joe Basta and firefighters Jeff Chichester and Matt Suhayda pulled over, as did other drivers, including the man whose vehicle struck YoYo. The dog had wandered from her home nearby. The driver said he couldn’t stop in time to avoid hitting YoYo.
“The dog had landed in a ditch and was obviously in a lot of pain with serious injuries,” District 7 spokeswoman Autumn Waite said. “The crew knew the dog needed medical attention quickly, and much like a human patient, needed to be transported as cautiously as possible to prevent further injury.”
Fire engines often include equipment one would find in an ambulance, including a backboard to keep patients stabilized, Waite said.
The crew carefully placed YoYo on a backboard and drove her up the street to the Clearview Animal Hospital. YoYo’s owner was contacted and followed them there.
“We are happy to report the dog is home, and while she still has injuries that are being treated, she is on the road to recovery,” Waite said.
Waite said quick work at the animal hospital helped save YoYo’s life.
She also praised bystanders who helped at the scene.
“It was lots of people doing the right thing,” she said.
