Family secrets surface in the Season 3 opener of “Major Crimes,” when a father and his two sons go missing. Mary McDonnell returns as LAPD Capt. Sharon Raydor. 9 p.m., TNT.

“Murder in the First” is a new drama from producer Steven Bochco. It follows a pair of San Francisco homicide detectives (Taye Diggs and Kathleen Robertson) as they investigate two killings that appear to have links to a Silicon Valley tycoon (Tom Felton). 10 p.m., TNT.

Tuesday

In the new drama “Chasing Life,” an ambitious Boston journalist (Italia Ricci) discovers she has cancer just as her career and a new romance are blossoming. Still, she resolves to live life to the fullest. 9 p.m., ABC Family.

The doctor is back in. As “Royal Pains” launches its sixth season, Hank (Mark Feuerstein) is returning to the Hamptons after traveling the world for a while. Turns out, much has happened in his absence. 9 p.m., USA.

Wednesday

Dudes rule at Guys Choice 2014. It’s the offbeat awards ceremony that hands out honors in such categories as Guy of the Year (Matthew McConaughey) and Decade of Hotness (Sandra Bullock). 9 p.m., Spike TV.

Thursday

The 10-part documentary series The Sixtiescontinues with a look at President John F. Kennedy’s assassination and an examination into why the event remains so compelling. 8 p.m., CNN.

Friday

In the Season 2 premiere of Monumental Mysteries,we visit Margate, N.J., home of Lucy the Elephant. No, it’s not a real creature, but a six-story building shaped like one. 9 p.m., Travel Channel.

Saturday

AFI Lifetime Achievement Award: A Tribute to Jane Fondahas Hollywood bigwigs gathering to honor the actress who has starred in more than 40 films and collected two Oscars (“Klute,” 1971; “Coming Home,” 1978). 9 p.m., TNT.
