The Seahawks have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with free agent defensive tackle Kevin Williams.
Williams, who turns 34 later this summer, has spent his entire career in Minnesota, and was a six-time Pro Bowler with the Vikings and a member of the NFL all-decade team for the 2000s. The deal is worth $2 million according to ESPN’s Ed Werder.
Williams has started all but five games in his 11-year career, including 15 games last season when he had 29 tackles, 3.5 sacks and an interception. Williams reportedly had worked out for both New England and the New York Giants, and told the Pioneer Press that he would consider retiring if he didn’t get an offer he considered fair value.
The Seahawks signing Williams could be similar to last year’s signing of another former Vikings Pro Bowler, Antoine Winfield. The Seahawks brought in Winfield as a possible nickel cornerback, but when it became evident that Walter Thurmond was more than capable of doing the job, Winfield ended up retiring amidst speculation he might be cut.
The Seahawks have a lot of young linemen who are fighting for roles, including 2013 draft picks Jesse Williams and Jordan Hill, but no much in the way of proven players beyond the starting four of Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett, Brandon Mebane and Tony McDaniel. If Kevin Williams has something left in the tank, he could certainly help Seattle’s defense, but by no means is he a lock to be on the team if those young players step up in training camp and the preseason.
