LAKEWOOD — A stubborn wildfire near Lakewood on Thursday evening burned 38 acres, threatened homes and filled the skies above north Snohomish County with a smoky haze that lingered for hours.
The fire was reported about 4:30 p.m. in a former logging area east of Warm Beach and north of Lake Goodwin, off Happy Hollow Road.
One firefighter suffered an eye injury from flying debris, Silvana Fire Chief Keith Strotz said Friday. No other injuries were reported.
Crews were summoned from throughout Snohomish and Skagit counties, along with the state Department of Natural Resources. A Snohomish County sheriff’s helicopter also used a bucket to drop water on the flames.
“The fire was so big we had to surround it to protect structures,” Strotz said. “We pulled departments clear to Gold Bar.”
Shifting winds complicated the response. At least one house was evacuated, but folks were allowed to return home about 10 p.m. Thursday, the chief said.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. No houses were damaged in the fire. A half-inch of rain that fell overnight was further good news. By morning, about 40 wildland firefighters remained on scene, looking for hot spots.
