Tips deal Austin Adam to Moose Jaw

Everett made a move with its defense today, sending veteran Austin Adam to Moose Jaw in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2015 bantam pick. I've been told the pick starts out as an eighth rounder, but could be bumped up to a sixth rounder based on how Adam performs with the Warriors.

Adam spent three seasons with the Tips. The 19-year-old from Surrey, B.C., appeared in 127 games during his time with the Tips. The tall stay-at-home defender tallied four goals and seven assists in those games.

Adam was originally a fourth-round pick in the 2010 bantam draft. He made the Tips as a 16-year-old and had a promising rookie season in a part-time role. However, he had an injury-plagued sophomore campaign in which he was limited to 31 contests. Then last season Adam began as a regular, but he was a healthy scratch for much of final month of the season, when the Tips went on their run to climb into a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference. He didn't play in the playoffs until Noah Juulsen went out with an injury.

Everett general manager Garry Davidson said Adam had expressed concern about his role for next season. Adam was seventh in the defensive depth chart when the season ended, and the only player ahead of him who's expected to be gone next season is graduated overager Matt Pufahl. The Tips also need to make room for newcomers Carter Cochrane and Jordan Wharrie, who both had cameos with the team last season, and Lucas Skrumeda is also in the mix following a good season with his junior A team. Given those circumstances, Davidson said he thought Adam could use a fresh start, which will hopefully happen in Moose Jaw.

With Adam traded, Everett has five defensemen returning from last season's team: Ben Betker (94), Mirco Mueller (95), Cole MacDonald (95), Kevin Davis (97) and Juulsen (97). Cochrane (96), Skrumeda (96) and Wharrie (97) are all signed to WHL education contracts.
