EVERETT — With Project Homeless Connect little more than two weeks away, organizers are seeking skilled volunteers. Hairstylists, eye specialists, denturists, teachers and interpreters are needed for the event that provides free services for homeless people.
The annual one-day event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 10 at Everett’s Evergreen Middle School, 7621 Beverly Lane. More than 1,200 people were helped last year at Project Homeless Connect, where those in need receive a hot meal, health screenings, haircuts, shoes and resources related to housing, jobs and veterans benefits.
United Way of Snohomish County is the lead organizer of the event, which brings together Snohomish County Human Services, the Snohomish Health District, nonprofit groups and hundreds of volunteers.
Michelle Morris, senior manager of community engagement with the local United Way, said at least one trained teacher is needed to oversee a child-care area. United Way spokesman Neil Parekh said the agency has money to pay teachers for the day. “We are looking for people who are CPR and first-aid certified,” he said.
Another big need is for licensed hairstylists who can bring their own supplies, Morris said. Thirty hairstylists turned classrooms into makeshift salons at the 2013 event.
Spanish and American Sign Language interpreters are needed. And for dental and eye services, needs include an ophthalmologist and a denturist. “We need eye specialists who carry their own insurance,” Morris said.
Helpers are also needed as greeters and to conduct exit surveys.
