Merchants collapse, lose 14-7

BELLINGHAM — The Everett Merchants built a 5-1 lead through five innings against the Bellingham Bells on Wednesday night, then struggled in an epic collapse, giving up 13 runs and losing 14-7 in a nonleague game at Joe Martin Field.
Merchants starter Matt Richard pitched well through five innings then began to tire. Everett’s bullpen couldn’t hold off Bellingham.
Jake Levin hit a solo home run and had a two-RBI single for the Merchants, whose overall record dropped to 11-3. Teammate Mark Medalia also belted a solo home run.
Everett faces the Seattle Studs tonight in a tournament in Grand Forks, British Columbia.
