EVERETT — Joyce Eleanor, the longtime CEO of Community Transit, is retiring after 20 years on the job. Eleanor will step down on Aug. 12.
Eleanor started work July 5, 1994, and is the longest-tenured leader of the six Puget Sound transit agencies, a group that meets monthly to coordinate planning and scheduling. She’s overseen the introduction of the second fleet of double-decker buses in the U.S. and the Swift rapid transit bus line, the first in Washington.
Her tenure also saw the launch of the Van Go vanpool program for nonprofit agencies.
Eleanor was one of the first women leaders of a transportation agency in the country when she took the top job for the now-defunct Midland, Texas-based MidTran in 1979.
Community Transit’s board of directors will name an interim CEO in coming weeks while it conducts a national search for a permanent replacement for Eleanor. The agency said it expects that process to take six months.
