Regarding Rev. Bill Hackett’s and Cassie Franklin’s guest commentary in Saturday’s Herald. (“ ‘Homeless’ are people in need of help”). It is with great joy and relief to read this article about our homeless in our Everett area. I hope most people got to read it, and if not — someone who did will tell them of its content — accurately. It looks for solutions.
I have what I feel is a good solution that both of these good people can do. It is simply to get Rev. Hackett to convince all the other churches with his, to open up their un-used clean, large meeting rooms downstairs and several bathrooms, some with showers in them, to provide one or two nights a week a place for the homeless, down-and-out people to get clean and sleep indoors — just to feel like humans again. Lots of these guys used to be your co-workers and neighbors. This help could be posted where the needy seek services and spread the word. Only one church member per night wood have to stay with them for security reasons. They need a place to relieve themselves and might get better. Let’s use these public, tax-exempt buildings for the public good for a change. We can start to open them up now — before winter. No need for a study, they will prosper if given a Christian chance. Thanks.
