Upcoming outdoor events: Mountain biking clinic, birds, Burke

Mountain biking: Stevens Pass Bike Park has upcoming gravity clinics. Riders spend time at their bike park while receiving expert coaching from Jill Kintner and Bryn Atkinson. Instruction is for intermediate to advanced riders and includes info on technical skills, bike set up, reading the terrain, race strategy and individual instruction. Clinics are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 12 for women and on July 13 for men; $250. Call 206-812-7844 to register.

Burke: Learn how to read a map, find the best tidal pools and birding spots, and how to press plants, pin bugs, or pitch a tent at Seattle’s Burke Museum between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, July 12. The summer festival is free with admission.

Make your own field journal, taste ice cream inspired by Burke fossils, see iconic state mammals and birds from the museum’s collections, explore geological forces, get a crash course in camping, and learn how to appeal to your child’s sense of adventure when hiking.

Birds: Pilchuck Audubon Society’s July program meeting, “Birds of Camano Island,” is at 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 11, at the Stanwood Library, 9701 271st St. NW.

Joe Meche, writer, photographer and past president of the North Cascades Audubon Society in Bellingham, will guide attendees on a virtual tour of Camano Island, focusing on its natural beauty and some of the birds that can be found in the area during different times of the year.

The diversity of habitat types on Camano Island includes fields, forests, wetlands and tidelands, which attract a wide variety of resident and migratory birds. Call 425-252-0926 for more information.

Hoot: See the film “Hoot” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Northwest Stream Center, 600 182th St. SE, Everett. The film is about three 12-year-olds who decide to protect owl habitat from poorly planned suburban development.

The film is free but reservations are required. Call 425-316-8592.
