UPDATE: Troopers on Monday evening said they are looking for William Westmoreland 38, of Stanwood, in connection with the crash and attempted car jacking. Identification found at the scene and witnesses led troopers to believe Westmoreland was involved.
EVERETT — Police were searching for a motorcyclist who crashed on I-5 on Monday and then tried to carjack a vehicle with two children inside.
The children’s mother fought off the man. He ran from the freeway and likely stole a silver and black Mazda Miata from the driveway of a nearby home.
The incident happened Monday afternoon in the southbound lanes of the I-5 just north than 128th Street SW. The motorcycle was speeding when it crashed into another vehicle, Washington State Patrol trooper Mark Francis said.
Other drivers attempted to help the motorcyclist, who was bleeding. He tried to steal one of their cars. The woman fought the man off. Two children were in the backseat of the car, Francis said.
The motorcyclist ran west, off the freeway. He may have assaulted a man who followed him, Francis said. Troopers believe he then stole a Miata.
The motorcycle appears to have been stolen, Francis said.
The suspect is white and in his 30s. He was wearing a red sports jersey with the No. 35 on the back.
