Ultrarunner says he was hit by lightning in race
Still, he says he kept running and finished the 100-mile race up and down 13 mountain passes in third place.
Campbell and his pacer were alone at the time and the strike could not be independently confirmed.
He said Tuesday that he heard a huge cracking sound and saw a flash of light before what he believes was an indirect strike — when lightning passes through the ground or a tree to another object.
He said his headlamp exploded but he suffered no injuries.
The state averages three deaths and 15 injuries a year from lightning.
