VANCOUVER, Wash. — A 15-year-old boy whose lawyer contends he was just joking has been sentenced to 10 days in juvenile detention for threatening to shoot students and staff at Skyview High School in Vancouver, Washington.
The threats were made during a two-week period in March.
The Columbian reports (http://is.gd/QoxZbV ) the teen pleaded guilty June 17 to felony harassment death threats. He was sentenced Tuesday.
Defense lawyer John Terry had asked court Commissioner Jennifer Snider for deferred disposition, which could allow the conviction to be vacated later.
Deputy Prosecutor Abbie Bartlett noted the duration of the threats. She said the boy named those he planned to shoot and looked up “how to commit mass murder” on the Internet. He also gave a date for when the shooting would occur [—] the first day of the new school year in September. The prosecutor sought a maximum sentence of 30 days.
Clark County sheriff’s deputies say there’s no evidence the boy obtained a firearm or had access to one.
