“Rene brought a passion for basketball to Cascade for the past two seasons,” said Everett School District athletic director Robert Polk in an e-mail. “His commitment was evident as he commuted from LaConner every day to coach the team. Cascade High School and the Everett School District appreciate Rene's contribution to the program.”
The former Bruins coach said he was so proud of his team for never giving up in an incredibly difficult Wesco 4A South.
“I loved coaching at Cascade. There’s great people, great kids,” Pedroza said. “The girls are very welcoming to new teammates. … They never had anything negative to say. They were always positive and they always worked hard and they always gave their best effort. The competition is pretty strong in the Wesco league but they never gave up. They were always pushing hard to get through whatever adversity was out there. They showed a lot of heart and commitment.”
Pedroza, who lives in LaConner, will become the head coach for the Sedro-Woolley girls basketball team next season.
“Talking it over with my wife, just seeing where we were, it's just something that would be a little closer to home,” Pedroza said. “We live up north and thought it would be good to be part of the Skagit Valley area. Thought it may be a good opportunity.”
Polk said that the search for a new coach at Cascade will begin immediately.
