ANAHEIM, Calif. — Some post-break aches, amplified by 28 innings over the two previous days, left the Seattle Mariners short-handed in Sunday’s 6-5 loss to the Angels.
Second baseman Robinson Cano wasn’t in the lineup because he is, in manager Lloyd McClendon’s words, “tight and sore” in his hamstrings.
The ailment isn’t believed to be serious. Cano was in the on-deck circle as a possible pinch-hitter in the seventh inning and is expected to play Monday when the Mariners open a three-game series against the New York Mets.
“He needs a day off,” McClendon said. “His legs (hamstrings) are tight. It’s been a tough grind for him. He played (in) the All-Star Game and traveled. It just makes sense, after 28 innings, to get him off his feet.”
Cano said he’ll play Monday, declaring: “Yeah, I’m good.”
Left fielder Dustin Ackley remained in the lineup but is battling a recurrence of bone spurs in his left foot. It’s an ailment that traces back to his college days at North Carolina.
“It’s fine once I get moving,” Ackley said. “But four days off (for the All-Star break) and then two long games (aggravated the condition).”
McClendon said reliever Danny Farquhar didn’t pitch Saturday in a save situation in the 12th inning because of “soreness” that surfaced Friday after pitching two innings.
Farquhar said:“Yeah, my elbow, but I could have gone an inning (Sunday). Not multiple (innings), but an inning.”
