Kamiak grad National Merit Scholar: Ryan Vogt, a recent graduate of Kamiak High School, has received a National Merit University of Minnesota Scholarship. The award was announced as part of a batch of 1,600 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners by the Illinois-based National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Vogt plans to study mathematics.
Mill Creek woman named a Madison Fellow: Carly Ann Peterson of Mill Creek, and a graduate of the University of Washington Bothell, has been awarded a James Madison Fellowship by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation of Alexandria, Virginia. The fellowship will fund up to $24,000 of Peterson’s study toward a master’s degree, provided the program includes a concentration of courses on the history and principles of the U.S. Constitution.
The fellowships are given to those who aspire to become teachers or improve their teaching of American history, American government and social studies at the high school level.
VFW awards scholarships to recent grads: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8870 of Edmonds on July 11 honored four recent high school graduates with $1,000 Dexter Miller Freedom Scholarships. Honored were Anna Matteucci and Tom Maxson, both of whom attended Edmonds-Woodway High School, and Jessica Pal and Rafael Achacoso, both Mariner High School graduates.
Matteucci plans to attend the University of Idaho this fall; Maxon and Achacoso will each head to the University of Washington; and Pal plans to move on to Edmonds Community College.
The Dexter Miller Freedom Scholarship is named for Miller, a World War II veteran and longtime Post member who passed away in October. Scholarship winners were selected based on their transcript, resume and an essay about freedom and the U.S. Constitution.
Full-ride nets Lynnwood grad a journalism degree: John C. Vogan, a 2010 graduate of Lynnwood High School, on May 18 received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York.
Vogan attended the school on a full-ride scholarship through the Park Scholar Program, maintaining a high GPA and performing several public service projects during his schooling.
His college years included time working for CBS News’ London bureau and a recent internship with a New York City news team. He hopes to further his career in broadcast journalism.
