In the 2nd Congressional District, Rick Larsen has done a lot of good things, but perhaps he goes a little too far in promoting development and commercial interests before those of us folks on the ground. Ready for a change in Congress? I am, and I see that change in Mike LaPointe, an independent candidate from Everett.
Mike is a regular guy who wants someone to represent regular folks, and he is willing to be that person. He believes that the two major parties are pretty useless, at least at the national level, as they are bought and paid for by large campaign donors. Mike accepts no corporate contributions; his whole campaign will be financed by people like us, the 99 percent, and he would work on campaign reform to overturn Citizens United and McCutcheon.
Whereas Rep. Larsen is OK with U.S. corporations going to China to employ Chinese workers to make things, Mike does not favor free trade treaties; he thinks workers in other countries also have rights, and it’s not OK for U.S. companies to go there and treat workers like slaves.
Mike is against privatizing Social Security and the U.S. Postal Service, and he doesn’t support the requirement for prepaid benefits for the latter.
Mike will not be tied to defense contractors and will be in a position to go to the Navy and bring an end to the Growler jet noise on Whidbey Island. He has pledged to do everything possible to stop the proposed Cherry Point coal terminal in Bellingham, and see to it that potentially dangerous coal, oil and gas trains will not continue to run through our communities.
According to Mike, tax reform should include fewer corporate tax breaks and moving subsidies from fossil fuels to green energy.
This independent candidate’s positions on other issues — women’s and minorities’ rights; immigration; minimum wage; guns; bringing the military home, and supporting veterans — are also more progressive and in keeping with the wishes of the majority of everyday people.
Mike LaPointe is the independent candidate who can best represent the people of District 2. If elected to what he considers as the people’s seat, he would seek input from as many of us as possible. Let’s vote for him this time.
