SAN BERNARDINO, Calif — Even though his team found itself with an early deficit, Pacific Little League manager Robley Corsi, Jr. wasn’t too worried.
It turns out, he didn’t need to be.
After falling behind 2-0 to a team from Bend, Oregon in the first inning, the Pacific All-Stars, a team comprised of players from Lynnwood, Edmonds and unincorporated Snohomish County, came storming back thanks to a three-run homer by Colton Walsh as Pacific defeated Oregon 10-2 in its first game at the Little League World Series Regionals in San Bernardino, Calif.
“It’s nice to get that first win out of the way,” Corsi said. “We feel great. We got lined up to where we had to play Oregon first. Going into this, we didn’t know what to expect.”
Walsh’s homerun helped spark the Pacific offense, and after the first inning pitcher Ian Michael pitched 2 2/3 innings of shutout baseball as Pacific overtook the team from Bend. Reliever Logan Kruse continued to contain the Oregon bats as Pacific pulled away with five runs in the sixth inning.
“We gave up a couple runs in the first inning. We had a few jitters and we settled down,” Corsi said. “This team doesn’t get down. We could be down by 20. We don’t get down. I told those kids it’s going to take a lot more than two runs to beat us.”
Walsh had the three-run homer and Robley Corsi, III went 2-for-2 on his birthday to help lead Pacific, in the regional round for the first time in 22 years.
The team from Snohomish County faces Montana next at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. Friday night, Corsi was scouting his next opponent in their game against Idaho.
