WICHITA, Kan. — Everett's rally in the bottom of the ninth inning came up short and the Merchants fell 2-1 to the Haysville (Kan.) Aviators in the National Baseball Congress World Series.
The game was a scoreless pitchers' duel until the final two innings. Haysville scored once in the top of the eighth and then scored what proved to be the game-winner on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth.
The Merchants loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, but scored just one run, on John Naff's sacrifice fly.
Everett's offense was led by Jaykob Sells and Ty Holm, who both batted 2-for-4 in the game. Holm's hits included a triple.
Everett plays again today in the double elimination tournament.
