BEREA, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns claimed injured offensive lineman Michael Bowie off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
Bowie was a seventh-round pick in 2013 and made eight starts during his first NFL season. The 6-foot-5, 320-pound Bowie started at left guard in the Seahawks’ 23-15 playoff victory against the New Orleans Saints but was inactive for the NFL title game against the 49ers and the Super Bowl against the Broncos.
Bowie was expected to contend for the starting job at right tackle going into training camp. But the Seahawks announced on Saturday Bowie needs shoulder surgery that will sideline him for four to six months, and he was waived/injured on Saturday.
Players with less than four years of service time cannot be placed on injured reserve during the preseason. The player has to be waived with an injured designation, and other teams can claim the player despite their injured status.
If the player clears waivers, the team can place the player on injured reserve.
The Seahawks waived/injured tight end Anthony McCoy (Achilles) and defensive tackle Jesse Williams (knee) earlier in training camp, and when neither player was claimed, both were placed on injured reserve.
The Seahawks could have kept Bowie on their 90-man roster until August 26, the date of the first round of NFL cuts, and then placed him on injured reserve.
The Seahawks claimed tackle Cory Brandon off waivers from Arizona to fill Bowie’s spot on their roster.
