Fire levy passing in Sultan

A measure to support maintenance and operations at Snohomish County Fire District 5 in Sultan was passing in preliminary election results released Tuesday.
The measure was ahead with about 68 percent of the votes counted Tuesday. The levy needs a supermajority to pass.
The levy would draw $625,000 a year for four years from property owners in the district. That’s $198 a year for the owner of a $200,000 house.
The money would be used to support around-the-clock staffing, particularly for medical emergencies, according to the fire chief.
Fire District 5 serves 10,000 people in the areas of Sultan and Startup. The district has a full-time chief and seven full-time firefighters, in addition to about 40 volunteers and part-time folks. The 2014 budget is $1.94 million.
The next drop of election results is scheduled for Wednesday evening.
