Mukilteo Mayor Gregerson on way to losing PCO position

Democratic 21st Legislative District Chairwoman Jennifer Gregerson appears to be losing her bid for re-election as precinct committee officer from her Mukilteo precinct.

Results from Tuesday’s election, updated Thursday, showed Gregerson, who also is mayor of Mukilteo, trailing losing legislative candidate Scott Whelpley, 103 votes (61 percent) to 86 (39 percent).

Gregerson said Friday that Whelpley had the advantage of being in the middle of a full campaign for state representative, noting that she and others in the area received five mail pieces about his campaign.

“I expect that bolstered his name identification and support in the precinct,” she said.

She said that ending her term as PCO wouldn’t change her status as District Democratic chairwoman, a position that she already had expected to leave when her term expires at the end of the year.

“I let the members know last year that I would not be running for re-election as chair, so that I can focus on other activities,” she said.

Whelpley stands third in the top-two primary for an open legislative position. Whelpley trails Republican Allen McPheeters and Democrat Strom Peterson for the position in the State House of Representatives with McPheeters leading with 32 percent to 28 percent for Peterson, 20 percent for Whelpley, 15 percent for Democrat Justin McMahon and 4 percent for Democrat Dick McManus.

The 21st District includes most of Edmonds, and unincorporated areas north of Edmonds and Lynnwood and northeast of Lynnwood, in addition to all of Mukilteo and part of south Everett.
