We subsidize low-paying employers

Lately in the paper I see several writers who seem to want to support low wages. One says higher wages hurt the young, and the other has a plan for stretching their meager pay check a bit farther.
I was always a union tradesman who made good wages and paid lots of taxes. I also used much of my good wages to help raise four girls. Now I am retired and enjoying a union pension and pretty high Social Security. I believe some employers just can't pay low enough wages and with low wages people have to rely on the taxpayers to help put food on their table. It's no wonder that the company who complained the most about lowering food stamps was Walmart. I can't see why taxpayers like my wife and me have to support low wage employers at all. Good, living wages help everyone in the area.
