Health care

Run system with non-profit boards

I'm responding to Richard Ek's guest commentary proposing to put the private sector in charge of the ACA instead of the government. I, too, am not a big fan of incompetence anywhere, especially in government. However, I strongly believe that putting the private sector in charge is a very bad idea. The private sector is based on profit — period, and there is already too much profit draining the dwindling dollars out of health care.
I propose instead that health care be managed along the lines of a public utility with regional and local management through non-profit boards. Just look how financially sound the Everett Clinic, Providence Hospital and Group Health (all non-profits) remain in our community. Look how well the PUD has done for us. The list goes on. While we are at it, let's do the same thing with the Internet, TV and cell phones!
