Write-in 1st District candidate on track to be on November ballot
Republican Mark Davies registered with the secretary of state prior to the Tuesday, Aug. 5, primary as a write-in candidate against Stanford, who was unopposed on the primary ballot.
As of Thursday, 7.74 percent of votes cast in the Snohomish County part of the district and 8.04 percent of votes cast in the King County part of the district were write-in votes. No other contest in either county showed more than 4.80 percent of votes cast as write-ins. Still, elections officials won’t know until next week whether Davies has placed second in the primary with the required 1 percent of the vote to qualify for the November ballot.
State Elections Co-Director Katie Blinn said Thursday that state officials won’t know exactly whom the 1,220 write-in votes are for until the counties certify their results Tuesday, Aug. 19.
She said that county elections officials send the information to state officials Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning.
With the current vote count of 15,578, Davies would have to have 156 votes to qualify for the November ballot.
Snohomish County Elections Director Garth Fell said Wednesday that the needed hand recount has yet to be scheduled.
A registered write-in candidate has his votes counted even with minor misspellings or incorrect or missing party preference.
The 1st Legislative District includes most of Mountlake Terrace, all of Brier and Bothell, unincorporated areas of Snohomish County north and east of Bothell, north Kirkland and unincorporated areas of King County between Bothell and Kirkland.
