Ellensburg — The Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office says A 58-year-old hiker who fell and broke his ankle has been airlifted out of Washington’s Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports that Roger Beardsley of Roslyn was hiking about 25 miles north of Cle Elum with three other people Tuesday when he was injured. One companion hiked out to a trailhead to summon help.
The hikers were prepared to stay overnight so the rescue began Wednesday.
Ground crews reached the group early Wednesday and contacted Whidbey Island Naval Air Station for help. A helicopter lifted the hikers from the area and Beardsley was taken to Ellensburg for treatment.
