VANCOUVER, B.C. — The Everett AquaSox were headed home Friday following their afternoon game against the Vancouver Canadians.
Apparently they packed their bats in advance.
Everett managed just three hits — all singles — as they were shut out by the Canadians 4-0 in Northwest League baseball action.
Vancouver wasn’t much better at the plate, collecting just five hits off Everett pitchers Ryan Yarbrough and Brett Ash. But the Canadians bunched two of their hits in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie. Gunnar Heidt hit a double and scored on a single by Mike Reeves.
Vancouver added three runs in the sixth inning. One run scored on a throwing error by Everett catcher Adam Martin, another on an RBI single by Ryan McBroom and the third on a sacrifice fly by Chris Carlson
Left-hander Matt Smoral (1-0) earned the win. He threw five scoreless innings, allowed just one hit and struck out four. Ryan Borucki blanked Everett over the final four innings to earn his first save of the season.
Everett’s lack of offense spoiled a strong performance by AquaSox starting pitcher Ryan Yarbrough. He held Vancouver scoreless over four innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
Ash (1-1) took the loss.
Everett and Vancouver, both 10-12 in the second of the NWL season, face each other again tonight at Everett Memorial Stadium. The contest kicks off an eight-game homestand for the AquaSox, their final regular-season homestand of the 2014 season.
