EVERETT — Designated hitter James Alfonso hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Everett AquaSox to a 3-1 win over the Eugene Emeralds in a Northwest League game on Wednesday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Adam Martin led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, and with two outs Alfonso launched his second home run of the season over the left-field fence to win the game.
Everett (12-15 second half, 23-42 overall) starter Ryan Yarbrough pitched four shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six. The left-hander extended his scoreless innings streak to 192⁄3.
The Emeralds opened the scoring in the top of the fifth inning. Everett reliever Brett Ash hit the first batter he faced, then promptly issued two straight walks to load the bases. Jose Ruiz grounded into a double play, but a run scored to give Eugene a 1-0 lead.
Everett tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh thanks to two errors by Eugene shortstop Franchy Cordero, the second of which allowed Martin to score from second base on a grounder from Kyle Petty.
Oak Harbor High School alum Yale Rosen went 0-for-1 with three walks, one intentional, for Eugene (12-15, 27-38).
