EVERETT — A seven-run, ninth-inning deficit was too much for the AquaSox to overcome as the Eugene Emeralds defeated Everett 8-4 in Northwest League play Thursday night.
After collecting just three hits through eight innings, Everett rallied for three runs on three hits in their final at-bat.
A walk and an error put runners on first and third to leadoff the ninth inning. First baseman Kyle Petty doubled to center field to drive in both runners. Two outs later, Phillips Castillo drove in Martin with an RBI-single to left field.
Eugene scored four runs in the second inning against Everett starter Luiz Gohara. After a walk and a hit batter, right fielder Nick Torres hit an RBI-single to center to score the inning’s first run. Gohara then walked another batter to load the bases before Trae Santos cleared them with a single combined with a fielding error on the the same play by right fielder Corey Simpson. Torres finished 3-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Emeralds.
Gohara was relieved after five innings. He allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits while walking two and striking out seven.
Everett scored a run off Eugene starter Logan Jernigan in the fourth inning when Simpson drove a solo home run over the center-field fence. It was his eighth home run of the season.
