Republican Mark Davies got enough write-in votes in the Aug. 5 primary to qualify for the November ballot against incumbent 1st District Democratic State Rep. Derek Stanford.
With Stanford unopposed on the primary ballot, Davies needed to finish second with at least 1 percent of the votes cast for the position.
That meant 156 votes. Davies had 611 (3.92 percent).
The 1st Legislative District includes most of Mountlake Terrace, all of Brier and Bothell, unincorporated areas of Snohomish County north and east of Bothell, north Kirkland, and unincorporated areas of King County between Bothell and Kirkland.
Of 10,642 Snohomish County votes for the position, Stanford had 9,819 (92.27 percent), with 823 write-in votes (7.73 percent), of which 381 (3.58 percent) went to Davies. The position was blank on 3,712 ballots.
Of 4,945 King County votes, Stanford took 4,548 (91.97 percent) with 397 write-in votes (8.03 percent), of which 230 (4.65 percent) went to Davies. More than 1,550 King County voters left the position blank on their ballots.
Davies had filed as a registered write-in candidate, meaning that votes counted for him even with minor misspellings or with incorrect or missing party preference. A registered write-in candidate must pay the same fee as a candidate who appears on the primary ballot.
Davies ran as an unregistered write-in candidate against State Rep. Luis Moscoso in 2012. He qualified for the November ballot with no party preference. He lost to Moscoso by a 61 percent to 39 percent margin. This year, as a registered write-in, Davies will appear on the November ballot with a Republican party preference.
Snohomish and King county officials certified results Tuesday, Aug. 19. State officials certify final results Friday, Aug. 22.
