First off, the injury list, which is neither long nor too serious sounding, at least based on what Pete Carroll said after the game.
TE Cooper Helfet, who was upended on an 8-yard catch in the second quarter, hurt his shoulder, knee and “something else” according to Carroll. No timetable was given for his return, but any time missed would be tough news for Helfet, who seems to be in good position to make the team should the Seahawks decide to keep three tight ends.
S Jeron Johnson hurt his foot, though Carroll said the injury wasn’t serious, and Johnson said the same thing via Twitter after the game. Heath Farwell hurt his groin, though Carroll did not say how much time, if any, the veteran linebacker would miss.
Onto the game, which saw the Seahawks dominate for a second straight week. No these results don’t count, but it’s hard not to be impressed with the past two performances, especially by the offense.
“It’s preseason,” said receiver Doug Baldwin. “We’ve been doing well, we’ve been executing pretty well, but at the same time it’s preseason. The teams that we’re facing, they’re not scouting us and we’re not scouting them, so right now it’s just guys flying around making plays, and we’ve always been able to do that because of the effort and enthusiasm we have with this team, so I’m not surprised.”
But if Baldwin won’t brag about the performance of the offense, consider this description of the offense from All-Pro safety Earl Thomas: “Explosive. They’re great. It’s fun to see, man. They’re growing up right before our eyes, and they’re just as good as us.”
—So good was Seattle’s offense that Jon Ryan didn’t punt until the fourth quarter, and that’s after he didn’t punt at all last week.
“Let’s be real, he’s got one of the best jobs in the world right now,” Baldwin joked. “He gets to sit on the sidelines and watch football and not have to do anything.”
Reminded that Ryan is the holder on field goals and extra points, Baldwin said, “He does hold, but that’s still kind of watching.”
—As good as the offense was, Pete Carroll almost seemed more excited about special teams play, saying in his opening statement, “I thought our kickoff coverage was excellent tonight. I was really fired up about those guys, a bunch of different guys contributed to get that done, so that was cool.” Carroll went on to point out returns by Percy Harvin and Earl Thomas before he got into the play off his offense or defense.
