Among TV’s best bets this weekend:
Regeneration happens. And so it is that Peter Capaldi finally gets the keys to the TARDIS this week on “Doctor Who.” Capaldi, a 56-year-old Scottish actor and lifelong “Who” fan, becomes the 12th Time Lord in the wildly popular franchise and he appears poised to battle Cybermen, Daleks and any other heinous villains that dare come his way. The feature-length season opener, “Deep Breath,” promises a “pulse-racing adventure through Victorian London.” 8 p.m. BBC America.
“Intruders” continues a night of “Who?” Body-hopping immortals hop bodies in this creepy, new series. 10 p.m., BBC America.
Who’s the next Gabby Douglas? Current and future stars will be on display during the USA Gymnastics Championships in Pittsburgh, where they’ll vie for spots at the World Championships in October and hone their skills for the 2016 Olympics. 8 p.m., NBC.
The “2014 MTV Video Music Awards” turn 30 which is, like, old, so nobody who watches MTV even cares about them. 9 p.m., MTV, VH1.
On “Masterpiece Mystery,” “Smash” and “Downton Abbey” stars unite to tell a story of career and sexual intrigue set in a 1961 London hospital in the three-part “Breathless.” 9 p.m., PBS.
The first season of “The Last Ship” concludes and probably not with an outbreak of Norwalk virus. 9 p.m., TNT.
Fangs for the memories? After seven seasons of sex, gore and stranger than strange shenanigans, “True Blood” bids farewell along with Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and the beleaguered residents of Bon Temps. 9 p.m., HBO.
