So Green sweeps its four training camp scrimmages to claim the 2014 Volunteer Cup, which this year was presented by Fanboni creator Marc Thompson.
Every scrimmage but one in camp was competitive right to the end, so the teams were constructed well this year. Green allowed just 13 goals in its four scrimmages, which was six fewer than any other team, so in the end it was goal prevention that made the difference. It's no coincidence that Team Green included the only veteran goaltender in camp, Austin Lotz. Lotz reprised his "closer" role from last year, coming in to play the second half of the championship game with a one-goal lead. I think we can officially declare him the Mariano Rivera of Silvertips training camp. Green also received a nice offensive boost from a local, as Lake Stevens' John Greer scored twice in the title tilt.
Next up is the Green vs. Grey intrasquad game at 3 p.m. this afternoon at Comcast Arena. Here's the rosters (players listed with birth year):
Goaltenders: Austin Lotz (95), Mario Petit (97).
Defensemen: Jantzen Leslie (99), Ryan Warner (98), Cory Babichuk (98), Tristen Pfeifer (96), Cole MacDonald (95), Kevin Davis (97), Carter Cochrane (96).
Forwards: Patrick Bajkov (97), Riley Sutter (99), Connor Dewar (99), Brayden Low (94), Dawson Leedahl (96), Remi Laurencelle (95), Sean Mallonee (98), Carson Stadnyk (95), Addison Runey (97), Spencer Gerth (98), Gunnar Wegleitner (98), Ivan Nikolishin (96).
Goaltenders: Dayton Rasmussen (98), Nik Amundrud (97).
Defensemen: Jake Christiansen (99), Noah Juulsen (97), Ben Betker (94), Avery Belcourt (98), Lucas Skrumeda (96), Alex Astasiewicz (98), Jordan Wharrie (97).
Forwards: Blake Bergquist (99), Bryce Kindopp (99), Ryan Anderson (99), Matt Fonteyne (97), Kevin Jakisch (98), Tyler Sandhu (96), Graham Millar (96), Logan Aasman (95), Andrew Fyten (98), Chris Stockl (95), Nik Malenica (97), Zane Jones (94).
The three non-listed invited players who advanced to the Green vs. Grey game were forwards Chris Stockl, Gunnar Wegleitner and Sean Mallonee. Stockl is a 19-year-old WHL veteran, while Wegleitner and Mallonee are 16-year-olds who were highly visible throughout the scrimmages, so it's no surprise to see those three make the cut. Two players who would have played in this game, but had to leave because of plane flights, are defenseman Cam Dykstra (98) and forward Carson Dimoff (99). Forward Kohl Bauml (94) and goaltender Carter Hart (98) are sitting this one out.
