Green vs. Grey

EVERETT — The Everett Silvertips gave several of their veterans the day off for Sunday’s Green vs. Grey game.

But one veteran unquestionably came to play.

Jari Erricson put on a show during Everett’s training camp concluding event, netting a hat trick and adding two assists as Grey dominated Green 10-2 at Comcast Arena.

Everett’s top veterans, including last season’s leading scorer Tyler Maxwell and co-MVPs Ryan Murray and Kent Simpson, were relaxing in the stands Sunday. So they received a birds-eye view of an Erricson-inspired drubbing by the Grey team.

“It was a bit of a lopsided game,” said the 17-year-old Erricson, who’s looking to build upon a promising rookie campaign. “Being one of the veterans I thought I needed to kind of set the pace out there, show them how to go and make it a good, fast game.”

Fifteen-year-old Kyle Raymond added two goals for Grey, while 17-year-old hopeful Carson Samoridny chipped in with a goal and three assists. Vladimir Dolnik, Carson Stadnyk, Dawson Leedahl and Austin Adam also found the net for Grey.

Josh Winquist had a goal and an assist and Cole MacDonald also scored for Green.

New Everett coach Mark Ferner spent the entire training camp, including Sunday’s Green vs. Grey game, as an observer. He begins the hands-on portion of his duties this week as the Tips begin practicing in advance of next weekend’s Everett Silvertips Preseason Tournament, when the Tips will play their first three exhibition games.

“(Sunday’s game) was a little one-sided, but it’s been a long camp and we’ve been on the ice a lot,” Ferner said. “It’s good to take a peek at these kids and give them a last opportunity to make an impression. I just look forward to getting on the ice with them next week and starting to get some structure in place.

“There has to be structure in how we want to play, not only system-wise but as far as an identity of a hockey team,” Ferner added. “It will be a long week for the hockey players, a lot of meetings, a lot of teaching, a lot of on-ice stuff. We’re looking forward to getting on the ice with them.”

Sunday’s game was all one-way traffic, and Erricson did most of his work early as Grey took control. Grey outshot Green 18-7 in the first period, with Erricson scoring one goal on a penalty shot and setting up Stadnyk for another on an impressive display, when he worked his way through a defender and whipped a pass from the corner to the far post.

Green finally got on the board midway through the second when Winquist found MacDonald pinching in on the back door just after a power play expired. But then Erricson and Samoridny went to work. Samoridny’s efforts in front of net allowed Erricson to poke home an airborne puck less than two minutes after Green scored, then Erricson set up Samoridny with another nice cross-crease pass during a power play late in the period.

Grey then rubbed it in during the third, including two goals in the final minute to reach double digits. The first of those last-minute goals gave Erricson his hat trick as he cleaned up in front following Stadnyk’s attempted feed from behind the net.

The Tips reassigned another 18 players following Sunday’s game. That leaves 36 with the team heading into next week’s Everett Silvertips Preseason Tournament. They are, with birth years:
