Regarding the Monday article, “Many ‘Days of Caring' volunteer opportunities around the county”: Opportunities abound to make a difference on the Days of Caring. An opportunity for people not able to work physically on the projects mentioned is to use your voice to make a difference. Speaking or writing your elected officials can actually save lives.
For example, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, is coming up for new funding that will help developing countries to create sustainable programs for vaccinating all children. With the global spread of disease, Gavi protects us all. Asking for an American contribution of $250 million over the next four years will help ensure Gavi is able to reach another 300 million children, saving over 5 million lives. More immediate with the start of school, is the question of kindergarteners being ready to begin. Calling for universal pre-kindergarten education will give all students a fair start. So join in the Days of Caring by exercising your rights as a citizen to advise our government to do things that really make a difference.
