What: Acer japonicum, Aconitifolium, the fern leaf maple that is also known as full moon maple. A deciduous small tree, it was cultivated in 1888 and is a very popular selection in public Japanese maple collections throughout the world. Grown primarily for its interesting foliage and outstanding fall color, it is a graceful addition to the garden, yard or patio. In the early spring, it is awash in tiny red flowers most noticeable up close.
Sun or shade: This tree prefers dappled shade to part sun.
Size: At 8 to 10 feet high and as wide, it is an excellent choice where space is an issue.
