Tips score some more goals

Several years ago when Ryan Chynoweth was a young player in the Tips organization, I had a chance to talk to Ryan’s dad, Kootenay general manager Jeff Chynoweth, during training camp. The elder Chynoweth lamented that every year the Ice would go to the Tri-City Preseason Tournament and get smoked, because it was Kootenay’s first preseason games after one week of practicing, while all the other participating teams already had practiced for two weeks and played three preseason games the previous weekend. So take any preseason result against Kootenay in Kennewick with a grain of salt.

That said, holy crap! Who could have imagined that the same Silvertips team that scored four goals total in three games last weekend would throttle an opponent 8-2, the way Everett did to Kootenay today.

In on odd mathematical phenomenon, this was the second straight day in which Everett equaled the total number of goals it scored in all its previous preseason games combined (what’s the mathematical term for that?). That means I expect the Tips to score 16 when they host Seattle next Friday.

It was a true team effort today as eight different players scored goals for Everett, and no player registered more than two points. For the record, the goal scorers were Remi Laurencelle (his third preseason goal), Chris Stockl, Kohl Bauml, Tyler Sandhu, Logan Aasman, Nik Malenica, Brayden Low and Graham Millar. Noah Juulsen and Ivan Nikolishin each added two assists. Thirteen different Everett players hit the scoresheet, and only three didn’t finish as plus players. Low led the plus/minus department at plus-3, but no one else was more than a plus-2, further reinforcing the notion of it being a team effort.

Everett outshot Kootenay 31-18, so there wasn’t a lot of work for the goaltenders. Austin Lotz started again and stopped all 11 shots he faced. Mario Petit played the second half and didn’t get much chance to show what he could do, facing just six shots and stopping four.

Today’s victory improved Everett’s preseason record to 3-2 and capped off a positive weekend for the Tips. Everett has two preseason contests remaining, next weekend’s home-and-home against the T-birds.
