I came across two posts today that are interesting for anyone who likes aviation and/or abandoned places. The posts give readers a glimpse into Athens’ abandoned Ellinikon International Airport.
The airport closed down in 2001, and has been little used since then. Four airplanes, including a Boeing 747, are parked at the south end of the tarmac. They belong to Olympic Airlines, Greece’s flag carrier.
A post on Urban Ghosts takes readers inside the abandoned jumbo jet, a 747-200B with registration number SX-OAB. Born in Everett, the plane now appears all but forgotten in Athens.
The other post on Flight Club goes inside the airport’s buildings. My favorite photo is of an escalator completely covered with binders.
