EVERETT — The city is holding a competition to select a new official logo and is offering $5,000 for the new design.
The contest is open to anyone, and the winning design will find its way onto city documents, uniforms, vehicles and other city properties.
The current logo is only 20 years old, but its angled style seems more in line with what people in the 1970s thought the future would look like.
“I think most people in the city agree that it’s time for a refresh, a new look,” said city Communications Director Meghan Pembroke.
To keep costs down, the new logo will be put on stationery and the website first, where it’s cheap or free to do so, and only gradually added it to uniforms or vehicles as those are replaced or upgraded.
The contest will allow anyone to upload either a completed logo or a design concept. The public will be able to vote on favorites, and the public’s top 15, plus five more selected by the city’s Cultural Arts Commission, will be forwarded to a judging panel to pick the winner.
The winning design will be presented to the City Council for approval in late November or early December.
The cost for the process isn’t expected to be higher than $10,000 to $12,000, including the $5,000 award money, Pembroke said, and mostly reflects staff time and resources.
The city is also in the process of upgrading its website, which the City Council approved Aug. 20. That project, at a cost of about $79,000 plus an annual maintenance contract of about $12,600, is expected to be completed by the spring 2015.
Details of the contest, including design specifications, are on the city’s website: everettwa.org/logo.
