Stacie Ventura is the new executive director of the NOAH Center, an animal shelter and spay/neuter clinic in Stanwood. She assumed the role on Sept. 10 after serving as the interim executive director following the departure of former director Lisa Steenson. Ventura has been with the NOAH Center since July 2003, serving in a variety of roles.
Edelman, a public relations firm, has named Gina Avila the senior vice president and group director for digital in the Pacific Northwest. She will partner with leadership in Seattle and Portland to drive digital strategy for clients and lead a staff of digital specialists across the region. Avila will report to Will Ludlam, general manager of Edelman Seattle, and be based out of Edelman’s Seattle office.
JLL, an investment management firm, has announced the appointment of managing director Joe Smurdon to its regional leadership team. He will operate out of the firm’s offices in Seattle and Bellevue to drive recruitment, training and business development across the region. A 25-year veteran of commercial real estate, Smurdon previously ran JLL’s marketing and business development team for the Americas.

Clinic award: The Everett Clinic has confirmed that it was awarded the Best Medium-Small Healthcare Provider for the Western United States Award in the 2014 Privacy Excellence Awards from patient privacy monitoring company FairWarning. The honor came in Feb. 2014. The Everett Clinic was selected for the award by an independent panel of privacy experts from around the world.

Open house at Herald’s new offices: The Daily Herald will host an Open House from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 23 at the new offices located at 1800 41st Street, S-300, Everett. Light hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be served. The event will feature a silent auction with memorable pieces of Herald history. Proceeds benefit The Herald Editorial Scholarship Fund through the Greater Everett Community Foundation.
Creating Vibrant Communities luncheon: Registrations are still being accepted for Creating Vibrant Communities — a luncheon featuring Gil Penalosa, executive director of the Canadian non-profit 8-80 Cities. Arts festival: Schack-toberfest, a four-day harvest themed weekend, runs Sept. 25 to 28 at the Schack Art Center located at 2921 Hoyt Avenue, Everett. ‘Schmooze Cruise’ planned in Skagit County: The Economic Development Association of Skagit County will present their annual Schmooze Cruise to coincide with National Manufacturing Day on Oct. 3. Van Go vans for nonprofits: The deadline to apply for a van from Community Transit’s Van GO program is Sept. 26. The agency will grant up to ten 12-passenger vans to Snohomish County non-profit organizations that will use the vehicles to help meet community transportation needs. PUD website offers online tools: The Snohomish County PUD wants consumers and businesses to be aware that there are many valuable tools, resources and customer-friendly features at the PUD’s website, www.snopud.com. These range from paying a bill online to conservation program offerings and preparedness tips for power outages. The website also offers directory of PUD-registered contractors and a number of educational videos on different topics.
Hundreds attend celebration at Swedish Edmonds: About 300 people celebrated the hospital’s 50th anniversary and ground-breaking milestones at Swedish Edmonds last week. The hospital is opening a two-story, 77,000-square-foot addition to include a new emergency department, urgent care center, observation unit, outpatient diagnostic imaging center and new lobby and more. State attorney general, Better Business Bureau warn about book scam: The Washington State Office of Attorney General and the Better Business Bureau warn consumers about a school book scam. School employees have reported receiving official-looking invoices from a fake company called Scholastic School Supply for books they did not order. The name is similar to the legitimate publisher Scholastic. Do not pay these suspicious invoices, but instead contact the Federal Trade Commission.
Grocery chain allows customers to buy charity milk vouchers: Milk is one of the most requested items at food banks yet it is also one of the least-donated. Through the end of September, the Kroger family of stores, including Fred Meyer, is inviting customers to purchase a $1, $3 or $5 milk voucher donation when checking out. Donations collected will benefit local food banks affiliated with Feeding America.
New skin-care clinic opens in Everett: Grove and Kane, a new skin-care clinic, opened in Everett on Aug. 2. Company president and licensed esthetician Karen Olsoy grew up in Mukilteo. Tourism grants in Snohomish available: The City of Snohomish is accepting applications from non-profit agencies for projects that assist tourism development and promotion in the community. Completed applications are due by 4 p.m. Sept. 30. No applications received after that time and date will be considered. Mortgage company opens Everett offices: Procura Mortgage Company has expanded to Washington with new office openings in Everett, Bellevue, Tacoma, and Puyallup. The company also maintains an office in Scottsdale, Arizona, which opened earlier this year. Procura Mortgage Company features an experienced team of local, licensed mortgage professionals.
Online database reveals toxic chemicals in consumer products: Lab results revealing levels of toxic chemicals in consumer products sold in Washington are now available through an online database. The database includes test results for products such as children’s and baby’s items, clothing, personal care items, toys, children’s upholstered furniture, and electrical and electronic items. Tests show most manufacturers are following laws regulating the use of toxic chemicals.
Federal money to help small businesses export goods: The U.S. Small Business Administration has awarded the Washington State Department of Commerce a third year of federal funding to help small businesses grow through exporting. The $494,200 grant, part of the State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) program, is the second largest state award from a total of $8 million awarded nationwide.
Inslee: Hold net neutrality meeting in Washington state: Gov. Jay Inslee has sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission expressing his concern with the commission’s decision to host all its public discussions on “net neutrality” or Open Internet in Washington, D.C. He invites the commission to hold an event in Washington state, which is home to a large internet-related business community with much at stake in this proceeding.
