PUYALLUP — The Pierce County sheriff’s office says a man fatally shot himself as deputies approached his pickup truck Tuesday morning in the parking lot of a store in the South Hill area of Puyallup.
Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said a deputy who heard the gun shot thought it was directed at officers and fired a shot. Troyer says the fatal shot was self-inflicted. The deputy did not hit the man.
Deputies had responded to a report about 6 a.m. Tuesday that the man in the parking lot was despondent because he was under criminal investigation. Troyer won’t say what possible crime was under investigation because the man was not charged.
No deputies were hurt.
