Incumbent 1st Legislative District Democratic State Rep. Derek Stanford faces Republican Mark Davies on the Nov. 6 ballot.
The 1st District includes most of Mountlake Terrace, all of Brier and Bothell, unincorporated areas of Snohomish County north and east of Bothell, north Kirkland and unincorporated areas of King County between Bothell and Kirkland.
Stanford sent a campaign statement in September about what the legislature should do to comply with the court order to provide full state support for public education. Davies has not responded to requests for a statement.
Here is Stanford’s statement:
Derek Stanford (Prefers Democratic Party)
Education is about opportunity. I believe full funding for K-12 education is not only a constitutional requirement; it’s a moral responsibility. In the coming session, we must put aside partisan differences to fund education ensuring the next generation can compete in the global economy. We should also remember that education is not isolated from the rest of a child’s life. If kids are homeless, or hungry, or lack access to higher education, they will not fully benefit from our investments in K-12 education. Great schools and healthy families are the foundation for vibrant communities and a strong economy.
