You know about Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, but what about Valentina Tereshkova? The Russian became the first woman to go into space in 1963, 20 years before Ride.
How about Svetlana Savitskaya? Another Russian, she became the first woman to walk in space in 1982.
Their histories and a host of others’ have been collected into a site by The Telegraph newspaper in the United Kingdom.
Its aim is not to re-visit the space race between the two world powers. Rather, it’s to feature women in space and urge women and girls to consider STEM fields (science technology engineering and mathematics, for those of us who hate acronyms).
Also, here’s a story about how the number of women who work in the aerospace industry has remained stagnant for 20 years.
