The final Seahawks’ injury report is out this week, and it’s a lengthy one. The Seahawks will for sure be without Zach Miller, Bobby Wagner, Max Unger, Byron Maxwell, Jordan Hill and Cassius Marsh, and both Percy Harvin and Luke Willson are questionable.
Here’s what Carroll said about the injuries:
On Marsh, who broke his foot in Wednesday’s practice, the rookie defensive end will need surgery and is out six-to-eight weeks. Carroll wouldn’t say if a roster move will be made or not, but it’s hard to see the Seahawks saving a roster spot for that long for a player was only on the field for nine snaps last week, especially when so many other injuries necessitate adding help elsewhere.
On TE Luke Willson, who sat out Thursday and Friday with a groin injury, Carroll said, “He’s got a sore groin, and we want to make sure we rested him again today, and we’ll take it all the way to game time to make sure he’s OK.”
If Willson is indeed a game-day decision, expect the Seahawks to sign TE RaShaun Allen off their practice squad by Saturday. With Miller already out, the Seahawks can’t afford to head into a game with one healthy tight end (Cooper Helfet).
DT Jordan Hill is out with a sprained ankle, and with Marsh also out, expect to see Greg Scruggs in his first regular season since 2012. Scruggs missed all of last season with a torn ACL, then made the roster this year, but was inactive for the first four games. He was released before last week’s game so the Seahawks could add safety Steven Terrell, but the Seahawks released Terrell and re-signed Scruggs earlier this week, putting Terrell back on the practice squad.
“Scruggs is going to be fitting in have a chance to play this week,” Carroll said. “We’re excited for him. He’s been with us a good while, we like the way he works, he’s a good tough kid, he knows our stuff, he has the ability to play a number of spots for us. He’ll bring some flexibility to us, and he’ll be playing in this game.”
Byron Maxwell won’t play after injuring his calf last week, but the good news for Seattle is that Tharold Simon will make his regular season debut—he missed his entire rookie season with foot injuries—after completing his first full week of practice following knee surgery earlier this season.
“He had a great week,” Carroll said. “He looked like he was in top-flight shape and ready to go. He had an excellent week and we’ll expect him to play.”
Carroll wouldn’t say if Simon or Marcus Burley would start at right cornerback in Maxwell’s place. Burley is regularly Seattle’s nickel corner, but played on the outside after Maxwell went down last week. If the Seahawks wanted to help ease Simon back into game action, they could use Simon outside in their base defense, then slide him into the slot when they’re in nickel and play Simon at right corner in those situations.
“(Simon) is going to play in the game,” Carroll said. “Marcus is going to play as well. We’re going on what we’ve seen, what we’ve learned through the offseason and camp and all of that. He did a fine job, and looked exactly back on course. He’s had a good amount of time to recover and he’s worked really hard to get here and he did just fine this week. We’re not worried about him at all.”
On Percy Harvin, Carroll said only, “He practiced today, he got through today. He’s on the list as questionable.” But the fact that Harvin did practice Friday after sitting the day before would seem to indicate he’ll play.
On Bobby Wagner, who has been wheeling around on a scooter with a cast on his foot, Carroll said, “He’s got one of those turf toe injuries that’s really problematic, and it’s going to take him a while to get back. He’s in a cast right now, so it’s going to be a bit… We remain optimistic about his return, but it’s still going to take a bit.”
Carroll reiterated that Wagner did not have surgery on the injured toe.
