As expected, the Seahawks placed rookie defensive end Cassius Marsh on injured reserve Saturday, ending his season. Marsh, a fourth-round pick out of UCLA, fractured his foot in practice Wednesday, an injury that will require surgery. Pete Carroll described it as a six-to-eight week injury, and while that means Marsh could theoretically return this season, the Seahawks weren’t willing to hold a roster spot that long for rotational defensive lineman who only played nine snaps in last week’s game.
That move, along with the trade that sent Percy Harvin to the New York Jets, gave the Seahawks two open roster spots, which they filled by signing tight end RaShaun Allen and safety Steven Terrell of their practice squad.
Allen’s signing was expected because Seahawks are playing without starter Zach Miller, and could also be without Luke Willson, who is questionable with a groin injury that kept him out of practice Thursday and Friday.
Terrell, who was signed off the practice squad for last week’s game before being released and re-signed to the practice squad again, provides secondary depth with Byron Maxwell sidelined. While listed as a safety, Terrell served as Seattle’s nickel cornerback last week after Maxwell went down with a calf injury, forcing Seattle’s usual nickel corner, Marcus Burley, to play on the outside in Maxwell’s spot. The Seahawks are expecting second-year corner Tharold Simon to play after missing the first five games recovering from knee surgery, but considering he has practiced only a week, adding secondary depth is a logical move.
