MOUNT BAKER — The Washington Transportation Department has closed its first section of a highway for the winter.
With snow on the ground and more forecast, crews closed the gate Thursday on Highway 542 from the Mount Baker Ski area to Artist Point.
The three-mile road to Artist Point is typically the first to close and the last to open in the Cascades. It was open this year for 115 days.
Chinook and Cayuse passes and the North Cascades Highway also typically close for the winter.
