SNOHOMISH — Three men and a dog escaped an early-morning house fire Wednesday in the Three Lakes area outside Snohomish.
The fire was reported about 1 a.m. in the 8200 block of 171st Avenue SE.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it appears to have started accidentally in the garage, in the area of the chimney and two stoves, Snohomish Fire Chief Ron Simmons said.
The fire was fueled by tanks of oxygen and propane stored at the house, which was destroyed, the chief said. The propane caused the explosion heard by neighbors.
The nearest hydrant in the rural area was about 300 feet away. Fire had spread through the attic and the insulation before crews arrived. The first firetruck was on scene six minutes after the 911 call.
They remained on scene working on hot spots throughout the morning.
