Lending a helping hand

SEATTLE

Sticking your neck out to help someone else in need provides good vibes all-around, especially in tough times, a sixth-grade class at Brier Elementary School believes.

Shannon Gonsalves and Jessica Norenberg’s sixth-grade class took 38 boxes of items Thursday, April 16, for children and families who visit Children’s Hospital.

The effort was part of a schoolwide, yearlong “Giraffe Project,” where the students discover different ways that they can “stick their necks out” for others.

Students collected toys, books, movies, crafts, games and toiletries in the past month from all grades.

“The whole school helped us get collections to Children’s Hospital,” said Zack Saneto, a student in the class.

Gonsalves’ young son, Caleb, has spent a lot of time in Children’s because he has a feeding tube in his stomach and other problems. She found out from nurses there that finding lip balm and other items had been a challenge and that came up in discussion with her students.

“It stemmed from our conversation on how hard times were,” Gonsalves said of the students’ decision to help Children’s.

The students took on the project with gusto. The class does different service projects every year but this is the first time Gonsalves’ and Norenberg’s sixth-graders contributed to Children’s.

“It was pretty much their baby,” Gonsalves said.

After dropping the boxes off, the students stayed to help the hospital prepare for its annual plant sale.
