50 years ago (1964)
The aroma of roasting turkey wafted through the Everett city jail. Jailer Dick Marulla said that most of the 12 prisoners had spent Thanksgiving in jail before. The meal would be complete, with all of the extras.
Everett High School students contributed $350 toward their Thanksgiving basket project this year. Loading groceries that helped make up baskets for 25 families (which had 34 adults and 78 children) were Duane Van Beek, Nancy Robison, Pat Monk and Ann McGhie.
25 years ago (1989)
A Pam McGaffin article covered the Index School District. With 43 students, it was the smallest in the county.
Interim superintendent and former Everett administrator Orin Fjeran said that if Index was willing to support its school they could maintain the good-quality staff, and students could get an adequate education.
Students at Cedar Valley Elementary, housed in the old Madrona Junior High campus, were enjoying art classes through an artist-in-residence program.
Artist Karen Stocker said art was a great builder of self-esteem.
Lael William, art manager in the Edmonds School District, said the children really enjoyed the program.
