LANGLEY — Friday night the South Whidbey boys team recorded a big upset.
Now, the Falcons are hoping to avoid being upset themselves.
South Whidbey held on to beat Cedar Park Christian-Bothell, the No. 3 team in the latest Associated Press 1A poll, 52-50 in an overtime Cascade Conference thriller.
“It’s really huge,” said first-year South Whidbey coach Mike Washington, Sr. “I told the kids it doesn’t get easier because now we have a bullseye on our back from beating the No. 3 team in the state. I asked the guys if you guys want to practice tomrorow – I was going to give them the night off after going hard against Sultan and Cedar Park Christian – and they said, ‘Yup. See you at 8 o’clock in the morning.’ I’m excited about that. They’re putting in the effort.”
Parker Collins led all scorers with 24 points, including the game-winning basket on a putback in overtime to put the Falcons, who led by as much as 13 at one point, the final lead.
“He’s huge for us,” Washington said. “He played the entire game. He handled the ball for us, he rebounds, he leads. He’s definitely our athlete. … He’s a very smart basketball player. Without Parker we defintiely wouldn’t be as good as we are.”
